SCRIPTURE: Isaiah 61:1-8
So why Good News? Sometimes people ask, how can you always talk about and focus on the positives when there are so many negative thing going on in the world? It’s easy! JESUS!!!! Today we are going to talk about being Good News people. We all have warts but we are all still people of God. We want to be remembered as a person of God!
Does anyone know who struck out the most times in MLB history? It’s Reggie Jackson! He struck out 2600 times! Do we remember that about him? No, we remember him as Mr. October. He was one of the greatest sluggers in the history of baseball. People don’t remember his strikeouts. They remember his home runs.
God doesn’t focus on our failures either. He wants us to spread the Good News. Good News people have perfect timing! Call it just the right time. We send a note or a wave. I sent a scripture and story that I found this week and many of you responded back. I needed that today. This is what I sent.
Psalm 56:3-4 “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, in God I trust, and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”
As a child, I never like to show my fear. Even now, I hold back from sharing my true concerns because I don’t want to upset my family and friends. I pray, “Lord, I feel you drawing near to me today. You embrace me and tell me to share what makes me afraid. You reassure my anxious heart and turn fear into fearlessness. The deepest dark is dispelled in your light. The largest leaps of faith can be accomplished with ease when I jump from fear to trust. When I fall, you help me to dust myself off and enter a new day cloaked in faith. I know that my fragility is only weakness if I don’t give it over to your transforming strength.” I had never said or prayed anything like that before! It was not me! That was the timing of God!
Good News people express what Paul call “the fruit of the Spirit”.
Galatians 5:22-23 “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control. Against such things there is no law.”
Let’s just look at one fruit of the spirit this morning-JOY! Good News people are asked to give joy to others. What if we are asked to eat of the fruit of joy from God? He gives us that joy. We need to accept it and be grateful for it. The church needs to be joyful!
“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I say rejoice.” (Philippians 4:4)
“Rejoice always; pray without ceasing; in everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”(1Thessalonians 5:16-18)
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.” (Romans 15:13)
This week, partake in the love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self control that God gives to us. Make this guide your life! If you want to eat at the table with God and his Son, you must be with Him in the way that you live your life! Good News people let Jesus guide their lives!
