Scripture: Matthew 5:38-42
Life is truly lived when you go that extra mile. During the times of Jesus, Rome charged heavy taxes. To hold the people under strict bondage, the rulers never let the people forget that at any time they were subject to their orders. The rulers monitored everything that the people did. Since one mile was the limit, you can be sure that every step was counted and no one should go one step further.
Jesus taught us don’t stop with just one mile. Go the second mile! People at the time thought that he was crazy. He wasn’t crazy. He was giving them and us a model to live by. The second mile in our lives is one that enriches our lives. We need to reach out and help those that are less fortunate than we are. Jesus taught that the first mile is the one of duty. The second one offers us the privilege of helping others. The second mile eliminates the drudgery of life. It helps us to appreciate all that God has done for us. It makes us want to reach out to others. Many people go through life doing only those things that they are compelled to do. They find life to be bland with not much joy. They are missing the satisfaction of looking beyond themselves to do God’s work by helping others and spreading his word. The second mile is the one in which we make our own progress. We find enthusiasm and meaning in the things that we do for other people.
Find a job that you love and you will feel like you are not really working! Our lives are our jobs. Follow Jesus’ word and go that extra mile to find true meaning in life!
